Description
A Salvation Army Citadel, built around 1890 and altered around 1950. The building is constructed of red brick with painted ashlar dressings and a partly glazed, hipped slate roof. It is designed in a castellated style.
The exterior features sill bands and string courses. The building is two storeys high with a five-window front. Windows have glazing bars, and the cross casements have brick mullions and ashlar transoms. A slightly projecting central bay has a chamfered and rebated opening containing a two-light round-arched window with a round top light and simple tracery; above this is a crenellated parapet with machicolations. Flanking the central bay are three-stage square turrets built on stepped corbels, with a round-arched opening between the corbels. The middle stages of the turrets have blind crosslets, and the upper stages have three blind slits. The lower stages of the turrets have large cross casements. The narrower flanking bays also have crenellated parapets with recesses containing cross casements, and machicolations. The ground floor mirrors this with similar cross casements. Between the floors is a rendered panel inscribed "Salvation Army Citadel". Projecting outer bays have crenellated parapets with three blind slits; the left bay features a deep round-arched recess with a keystone and hoodmould, containing a round-arched window above a single window. A single-storey end bay to the left features a ramped coped parapet. A mid-20th century half-glazed double door sits within a segment-arched opening under a dummy balcony on corbels. To the right is a matching first-floor window above a mid-20th century glazed double door with a tiled surround, followed by a segment-arched recess containing stained glass overlight with mullions, flanked by moulded corbels carrying a dummy balcony with a dentilled string course. A narrow entrance bay to the right has machicolations and a transomed window, with a mid-20th century door with a tiled surround and a mullioned overlight above.
The interior includes an inserted ground floor supported by concrete posts and beams. The theatre-like auditorium has canted corners, ramped seating, a gallery, and cross beams on cast-iron posts. A steel trussed roof incorporates a large central rooflight. The proscenium arch is of plain design, with a platform and pulpit positioned in front.
