Description
Channing Hall, located on Surrey Street in Sheffield, is a Unitarian church hall built in the late 19th century, with some alterations made in the 20th century. The building is constructed of ashlar and features an Italianate style. It has a plinth, a cornice at the first floor, a prominent dentilled eaves cornice, and an open balustrade. The structure is two storeys high and consists of five bays, which are defined by Ionic pilasters on each floor.
The façade includes three moulded round-arched recesses, each containing two-light round-headed traceried windows with shafts, metal glazing bars, and transoms. Flanking these recesses are square recesses with single square-headed windows, and above them, round windows adorned with festoons. The ground floor features a round-arched arcade with a recessed central main entrance that has a panelled double door and a fanlight. On either side of the entrance are four recessed shopfronts, each with large single-pane shop windows and glazed doors, although three of these have lost their original fanlights.
Inside, the hall is said to contain a circular staircase decorated with glazed bricks, as well as an open timber roof.
