Description
The building is a rectangular gate lodge dating from the 19th century, featuring an off-centre arched entrance on the left. It is constructed of rubble and has a slate roof with central paired, offset chimneys that have weather-coursing and moulded capping. The lodge is one-and-a-half storeys high, with the lodge-keeper's accommodation located to the right of and above the carriageway. The entrance is adorned with Tudor arches that have dripstones and a partial stringcourse above, which returns around the left gable end.
Above the arch, there is a wide gable that includes a three-light mullioned and transomed wooden window with a returned label. Above this window is a niche that contains an early 20th-century painted clock face, which shows the time as six minutes to five, reflecting the six-minute ride to Nannau from the lodge, ensuring that visitors were never late for tea. The windows on the ground floor to the right and the gable ends are similar in style, while one window at the rear has been blocked. The entrance to the right is under the arch and features a stepped-up modern door, with a window to the right.
In front of the lodge, there are unusual contemporary curved rubble walls that sweep out to the left and right. These walls are topped with multi-Tudor-arched arcades, which have continuous joined labels and slate coping. The forecourt is enclosed by later plain iron railings and rubble gate piers.
