Description
Elusendy, located on Yspytty Road in Penmachno, is a former almshouse built around 1740, financed by R Anwyl and L Lloyd of Hafod-dwyryd, Penmachno. Originally consisting of ten dwellings, it was later reduced to five and converted into two houses around 1960.
The building is two stories tall with a U-shaped plan, constructed from local rubble and topped with modern slate roofs. The main entrance faces west and features a former doorway set between the arms of the U-shaped layout. This doorway has a segmental head with thin voussoirs, and above it, the wall rises into a small gable with a window that has modern glazing. Inside the U, the right side has a square-headed doorway, while the left side has a window that was formerly a doorway. The steeply pitched gabled ends of the returns each have a stone chimney, with the left one truncated, and four small windows, two on each story.
The outer elevations each feature a square-headed doorway and a small window for lighting the stairs. There are two modern broad casement windows on the ground floor, with two similar windows above in flat-roofed dormers. At the rear, the eastern elevation has three gables, with a tall chimney at each apex. The outer gables are blank, while the smaller inner gable has two small square windows on the first floor and two modern two-light casement windows on the ground floor.
The interior was converted into two houses in the mid-20th century. The northern house of the pair retains 19th-century stairs and 18th-century partitions on the landing. The ground floor features stop-chamfered main beams, and the fireplaces in the living room and kitchen have heavy stone lintels.
