Description
The former farmhouse at Sylfaen is a late 17th century or early 18th century rubble building with one-and-a-half storeys. It features rubble kneelered gable parapets and end chimneys with plain capping and weather coursing, topped with a renewed slate roof. The symmetrical front has a central recessed entrance with a boarded door, flanked by small 2-light windows—one with four panes to the left and an unglazed window to the right, both with wooden mullions. Above, there are three gabled dormers that are coped and kneelered, breaking the eaves, with unglazed window openings.
At the rear, there is a single-storey early 19th century gabled wing that forms an L shape with the main range, featuring an end chimney similar to the front. The northeast side has a deeply-recessed boarded door with an early 19th century sash window to the right, which has eight panes above two later panes in the lower section, and a projecting stone lintel. A similar window is located on the northwest gable.
A modern timber and corrugated iron lean-to is attached to the rear of the main block. Inside, the ground floor ceilings have stopped-chamfered beams, and there is an enclosed 19th century staircase. The left room, which was the former parlour, has a large inglenook fireplace with a stopped-chamfered inglebeam and a later bread oven that reduces its width. The upper floor features lath and plaster timber-framed partition walls and a contemporary pegged collar truss roof. The rear of the hall on the ground floor has two large openings that were knocked through in the early 19th century, leading to a beamed service bay or storage area.
