Description
Cwm Bwchel Farmhouse is a 17th-century building constructed from red sandstone rubble, which is whitewashed on the front elevation. It features a Welsh slate roof with stone tile eaves courses at the front and metal sheeting on the outshut, along with a red brick chimney. The farmhouse is a two-storey, three-unit structure with a single depth range and a long lean-to extension at the rear that serves as a wet kitchen and dairy.
The front-facing farmyard includes three windows. On the ground floor, to the left of the doorway, there are two camber-headed windows, with the right-hand one being larger. To the right of the doorway, there is a square-headed window. The first floor has shallow camber-headed windows. All these windows are 20th-century replacements, except possibly for the top floor left window. The doorway features a slated canopy and a fine doorframe with double ogee moulding, a moulded lintel supported by brackets, and a shaped doorhead with the initials "WP" to the left and the date "1694" to the right. The old boarded door has nails and strap hinges.
The lower gable end has an upper storey that is set back, with a broad window on each floor. At the rear, there is a projecting stone chimney stack with a cornice, which is unusually positioned laterally and may have been added later.
Inside, the entrance leads into a cross-passage that is partly blocked off by an inserted framed stair, which connects to the added outshut. Fox and Raglan suggest that this addition dates back to 1694, which may be accurate. The passage is separated from the lower end by a post and panel partition. The hall contains an altered fireplace that backs onto the cross-passage, an original blocked window on the rear wall, and evidence of a firestair. The ceiling features chamfered beams with bar-and-lambs-tongue stops. There is a post and panel partition with a plank door that has a cranked head leading to the inner room. The added lower end room has a fireplace on the rear wall that is now blocked.
On the upper floor, there is evidence of the original cruck building in a cupboard beside the stack, where a cut-off cruck blade can be seen. The principal rafter roof has a fairly low pitch and includes through purlins.
