Description

Soilwell Manor is a farmhouse dating to 1661. It was originally listed as Soilwell Farmhouse and later as Soilwell Manor. The exterior is rendered with ashlar detailing, featuring a Welsh slate roof and three brick stacks along the back eaves. One stack is now missing. The main front of the house has three plus one plus one bays, with four-pane sash windows, flat lintols on the first floor, and slight segmental heads on the ground floor. A three-light sash window with a four-pane central section is located to the left of the entrance door. The door itself is set within a porch with a very flat four-centre moulded sandstone head and a gabled slate roof, accessed by seven stone steps. Below the three-light window is a small square two-light chamfered mullion casement. A further four-light chamfered mullion casement is present in the basement, along with a single stopped drip. An earlier blocked opening, likely a door, with a similar drip is located at the extreme right.

The south-east end of the house is three stories and an attic, with a three-light chamfered mullion casement under a drip, above a four-pane sash over a two-light sash. There is a twentieth-century door to the basement on the left and a deeply set sash window.

Inside, the roof structure consists of eight bays, showing some evidence of light windbracing. A blocked three-light mullioned casement can be seen in the gable. On the first floor, a panelled dado is present to the right. A plain deep bressummer fireplace with a moulded surround is also visible. The ground floor features a large stone fireplace with a moulded surround and overmantel supported by four consoles, bearing the inscription 'Edificat Sully AD 1437: Redificat (sic) Soilwell Manor 1661'. This room features good fielded panels and a dado rail, alongside a blocked door leading to an adjacent room. A large central room has a plain moulded ceiling cornice and a large sandstone lintol. From the entrance hall, an arched door with four-by-four panels and seventeenth-century mouldings leads to a stair turret containing a wooden stair with round newel posts, some with ball finials, and three single fixed lights, externally chamfered and with dripstones. Numerous plain plank doors are found throughout the house. While the building has been altered, it remains a farmhouse of importance within the parish.
