Description
Hurst Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the 16th century and 19th century. It features rendered rubble walls and asbestos-cement slated roofs, with some exposed sandstone rubble at the basement level. The building includes a tall, one-wing gabled remnant of an early farmhouse, which has a large external eaves stack extending northwards beyond its outer wall. This wing connects to a later L-plan extension that has hipped roofs, all typical of early 19th-century design.
Approaching from the main road, the early wing on the left is three storeys high and has various casement windows. There is a 20th-century glazed door at the first floor, which is accessed by nine steps leading up to a quadrant arch over a heavy plank door that leads to the basement. The 19th-century addition is two storeys tall, featuring a one-over-two window arrangement. It includes 4-light over 5-light casements with segmental heads in the forward wing, and 2-light casements with glazing bars and segmental heads above a 16-pane sash window that is not aligned with the window above. There is also a 20th-century plank door with a 4-pane transom light to the left.
Inside, the old wing has a three-bay cruck roof and a heavy timber-framed wall at the upper level where it meets the newer work, with the wall thickness reaching up to 850mm. At the lowest level, there is a stone-flag floored cheese room. The main staircase is of the 19th-century stick baluster type. There are one or more bressummer fireplaces that are believed to be concealed by later alterations.
