Description

Llwyndyrus is a farmhouse, likely dating to the 18th century, built of rubble stonework with large quoins. The front is limewashed, and the roof is slate. The building comprises a long, two-storey, three-window range, probably representing the original farmhouse to the left, with a doorway offset to the right, and a secondary range attached to the right, featuring a secondary entrance at its left end. The main entrance is located in the second primary bay, accessed through a stone segmental arch now enclosed within a stone gabled porch with a stone lintelled opening and modern part-glazed doors. Modern inset windows are used throughout, with the upper floor windows set within the original openings. The south gable has been partially rebuilt, featuring two similar windows on the upper floor. Gable stacks are present, with one on the upper (northeast) end being external, and another at the lower end appearing to be added or rebuilt. A scratched inscription on the northeast side of the porch reads "E V 1775", likely referring to Evan Lloyd Vaughan of Corsygedol. Blocked pigeon nest holes are found near the south end of the south front. The rear of the property includes a short wing and two large raking buttresses. The rear windows have been replaced with stained timber, some retaining the original sliding sash pattern.

Inside, a cross passage, now interrupted, leads from the principal door, with a stud partition featuring an arch-headed doorway leading to the central room, and a late 18th century stair situated on the right. End rooms boast deep chamfered cross beams and joists, all with scoop and check chamfer stops. The south room has a large fireplace with a chamfered lintel and oven, and a low arch with radial stones on the south side leading to a former fire stair. The parlour at the north end is screened from the secondary entry passage by a fine linenfold panelled screen set within a timber frame; this screen appears to have been moved from its original location. The bressumer of the screen is carved with the intertwined draig goch and draig wyn, and the post beside the door features a carved vine scroll. This room also contains a large gable fireplace with a chamfered lintel set higher than usual, and no oven. Fire windows are located on each side of this fireplace, later blocked but one recently reopened. Behind a section of plaster frieze with moulded lys and roses below a plaster cornice and moulded panelling, a discovery revealed remnants of original plasterwork, including one surviving plaster lys on the north wall, believed to be part of a set of three representing the cognizance of Collwyn ap Tangno and the Fifth Noble Tribe. The main stair leads from the cross passage behind the main door to a half-landing, with a wide upper flight that was divided when the house was subdivided. On the first floor, the feet of numerous inserted trusses are visible below the ceilings. The soffits of the tie beams are grooved, suggesting the presence of timber partitions; one of these contains two-ply straw rope tightly woven into the studding and plastered, with strands approximately 25mm thick.
