Description
The chaff house at Uwchlawr-coed is a single-storey outbuilding built in the late 17th century, positioned behind and parallel to the main house's wing. It is constructed of mortared rubble masonry and features a roof made of small old slates. The doorway is located at the left (east) end of the rear (north) wall, with modern lights installed in the south wall and west gable. Small openings in the south and east walls indicate where power was transferred from a waterwheel, which is situated between the chaff house and the service rooms behind the west wing of the house, likely using a drivebelt mechanism to direct power to the rear yard.
Inside, the chaff house has been converted for use as a stable but still retains a simple A-frame collared truss. It also has small openings that are now blocked, which would have originally housed the axles that transferred power from the waterwheel to both internal and external machinery.
