Description
Uwchlawr-coed is a two-storey farmhouse that dates back to the late 16th century, with an extension from the mid-17th century. The eastern part of the building features a two-window range from the late 1500s, while the slightly taller mid-17th century range also has two windows. The principal elevation faces south and is aligned, but the rear extends out under a catslide roof over the service rooms. The structure is made of mortared rubble masonry, with large stones used as quoins and lintels. The modern slate roof includes stone coping at the west gable and tall stone stacks with dripstones and capping. The mid-17th century block has Velux windows on both the front and rear.
The older section has a central doorway featuring a cyclopean head with the inscribed date of 1585. The windows in this part are modern; to the right (east) of the door is a four-pane casement, and to the left is a shallower, wider light made up of two four-pane casement lights. On the first floor, the windows are four-pane top-hung casements. The two-window range to the west also has modern casements, with the first-floor lights being tripartite windows that have replaced the original ovolo-moulded mullions. There are narrow lights in the west gable, a blocked ground floor window, and scattered fenestration of four-pane lights at the rear, along with a doorway situated at the angle between the two blocks.
The interior was not inspected during the resurvey, but records indicate that the original layout, which included a hall, cross passage, parlour, and service room, has been lost, with only the pattern of the surviving ceiling beams providing evidence of it. Additionally, there is some indication of an original first-floor layout consisting of two rooms.
