Description

This is an agricultural range, likely dating to the 18th century, located at Uwchlawr-coed. The range comprises a cowhouse, stable/cartshed, barn, and haybarn, arranged in a linear formation. The western section, the cowhouse, is constructed from roughly coursed rubble masonry, incorporating large boulders, with lime mortar. The eastern sections are built from coursed, roughly dressed boulders. The roof is slate, with stone gable copings; the older western part was re-roofed with profiled metal sheeting.

The cowhouse is a three-bay range. It has a doorway offset to the right (east) end of the south wall, with two low ventilation slits to the left; a pitching door is set into the west gable. To the right of the cowhouse is a stable and cartshed, featuring a narrow doorway on the left and a wider doorway at the right (east) end. A threshing barn sits at a slightly lower level to the right, characterised by wide opposing doorways set beneath massive stone lintels. Three ventilation slits flank each doorway – two leading to a first-floor loft, with a ground-floor vent positioned between them. At the far right (east) end of the range is a two-bay block with wide opposing openings, which have been blocked on the rear (north) wall. Originally probably used as a haybarn, the range may have been adapted for use as shelter for livestock or machinery.

The older western section retains original collared trusses and rough purlins. The newer roof at the eastern end of the range has new sawn timbers.
