Description

The Quarryworkers' Barracks consists of two parallel rows of single-storey cottages, facing inward and aligned roughly from north-west to south-east. These rows are connected by a linking wall that features a flat-headed archway at the south-eastern end. Each row contains 11 cottages, each designed with a two-room layout. The larger room includes a fireplace and a doorway leading to a smaller room. The cottages are constructed from roughly coursed rubblestone and slate slabs, which are also used for quoins and lintels. The original roof timbers are completely gone, although the north-western end of the north-eastern block has had the two end cottages reroofed, but the slates have been removed here as well.

Each cottage has tall rectangular window openings, which were likely originally fitted with sash windows, flanking an offset doorway; however, all joinery is missing. There are slate-stone ashlar ridge or end stacks with slate drips. The back wall of each range features a single window in the larger room of some, but not all, cottages.

Notably, the gable-end room of the cottage at the south-east end of the north-eastern range lacks a fireplace, indicating that the gable-end stack was likely added for symmetry. In contrast, the built-out slate fireplace in the corresponding room of the south-western range appears to be a later addition, suggesting that this room was also originally unheated.
