Description
The gateway to the Church of Saint Mary is a Grade II* listed structure made of coadestone. It features an eclectic design that loosely reflects late Gothic style, characterized by an extravagant and theatrical decorative vocabulary that combines grotesque and exotic elements with conventional patterns. The gateway includes a four-centred archway situated between octagonal embattled piers, with every surface richly decorated. The piers are adorned with tiers of blind traceried panels featuring foliage and grotesques, above simpler panelled bases. Above this, there is a tiered frieze decorated with grotesques and foiled lozenges. The columns are topped with turrets, which are further embellished at the corners with elephants' heads, minus their trunks. The frieze band extends over the archway, featuring a vestigial pedimented centerpiece, foliate trails, foiled lozenges, crockets, and crenellations.
