Description

The gateway to the Roman Catholic Church of St. Mary, dated 1912, is constructed from sandstone. It features a wide, 4-centred arch set between buttressed piers. The arch has carved spandrels and is topped with a high stepped coping that includes a central niche with a statue of Our Lady of Dolours. On either side of this niche are blind traceried panels with Gothic lettering below the sills. The piers flanking the arch each have niches with open cinquefoil tracery in the heads, containing statues that carry the sacraments. The rear of the gateway is similar but only has the central niche, which holds a statue of a bishop.
