Description

1 Castle Street and 20-22 High Street Block of late Georgian houses; brick with hipped graded-slate roof, with brick stack shared between 20 and 22, and added skylight to No 22. High Street elevation is near-symmetrical in first and second storeys (12-pane hornless sashes to first floor, 9-pane above, with 2-pane windows to no 22) but ground floor arrangement differs; No 20 has a doorway to right with replaced door but retaining an overlight, and altered C19 shop window L. No 22 has a late C19 public house front framed by pilasters with fluted upper parts, foliage capitals to 3 pilasters framing the shop window, and repainted panelled fascia and dentilled cornice. Panelled doors to the R and L have overlights (the L-hand doorway now provides the entrance to 24-6 High Street).

Castle Street elevation is also balanced in its upper floors, comprising 3 window range of 12 and 9-pane hornless sash windows with blind painted windows in left bay. Ground floor has large C19 shop window with small-pane glazing in place of former doorway to right, and further blocked door at left. No 1 has panelled door with overlight to left, and 12-pane hornless sash window over blocked cellar opening.
