Description

Salutation is a U-shaped former stable complex dating from the 19th century, featuring one-and-a-half storeys arranged around a courtyard paved with black and white quarry flags. The building is constructed from coursed stone, partly rendered, and topped with medium-steep pitched roofs covered in fish-scale slates. To the left, there is a chimney with triple twisted terracotta Gothic stacks.

The central section is recessed and has glazed small-pane doors at its center, topped with a decorative sloped metal canopy porch. The roof includes three flat-roofed dormers, each with 2-part 12-pane casements. The left wing of the building has two large arched windows on both the gable end and the inner east side, the latter featuring a trompe l'oeil window in the center. Above the gable end windows is a small Gothic tracery oculus, accompanied by a decorative iron hanging sign. The west side features a prominent central gable with a large canted bay, which includes a 12-pane window flanked by narrow 4-pane outer lights. The bays on either side of the central bay also have smaller gables; the left bay includes an entrance with stone quoins, while the right bay has an arched window similar to the others.

The right wing has a voluted Dutch gable and large lattice-glazed doors that open onto a corbelled first-floor balcony with iron railings. Above the balcony is a trompe l'oeil oval oculus in the gable apex. The ground floor features a canted bay with a 20-pane front window and 8-pane side windows, along with another decorative iron hanging sign to the left. The inner side of this wing has a single-storey shop that extends into the angle with the central range, featuring a shallow canted front and small-pane glazing throughout. The east side of this block has an external rick stair providing access to a first-floor entrance.
