Description
The Mermaid is a two-storey cottage built in a picturesque Regency-Gothic style. It features a construction of whitened rubble under a slate roof with oversailing eaves and decorative cusped bargeboards. The cottage has two central chimneys with paired, offset stacks and pots, although one stack is missing.
The eastern elevation, which faces the Central Piazza, includes three ground floor entrances with small-pane glazed doors. To the right of these entrances, there are 2-light latticed windows on the first floor above. The western side of the cottage has a central gable flanked by smaller gables, all adorned with decorative bargeboards. The central gable contains an arched multi-pane casement, while the flanking gables feature dormer windows of a latticed type that barely break the eaves. There are also asymmetrically placed small-pane windows on the ground floor.
At the southern gable end, there is a Regency-style verandah supported by four decorative iron pilasters and topped with a sloped metal roof. Adjoining the plain northern gable end is a decorative iron canopy that covers a painted baroque wooden sculpture of the Virgin and Child.
