Description

The terraced walls and gated entrance to the University College of North Wales Main Building are constructed of rubble and feature a stone flagged terrace. The walls have a high battered base, freestone piers, and banding in the middle, topped with wave moulded coping and cast iron lamp standards. At either end, there are rounded bastions and round arched entrances flanked by buttresses, piers, and tapered finials, with iron gates that display the UCNW monogram. Stone steps descend at both ends, turning at right angles, with three additional isolated lamp standards along the path leading to Deiniol Road. The rubble wall continues northwest to a grand gated entrance, which features ashlar gate piers with ball finials and classical cast iron gates that have implied Ionic pilasters. The gates are adorned with a scrolled overthrow displaying the G V R coat of arms and the date 1910. A short section of wall extends north to another gate pier with a finial. The wall rises along Penrallt Road at the southeast side of the Library range and ends at the projecting end bay.
