Description

The Town Hall is a 18th-century building featuring a six-window south front with asymmetrical projecting side ranges, which previously had a polygonal end on the left. To the left, there is a two-storey, jettied, and gabled porch that once opened onto a cross passage. The entrance is segmental arched and pilastered, with double doors. The later section on the right is slightly advanced. The building has small pane sash windows, some of which are paired or tripartite, along with small pane attic windows located midway up the roof pitch.

On the left side, there is a twin gable end from the 1810 northwest extension, which includes two Gothic windows in former doorways and round-headed small pane windows above. The three-window north elevation features similar glazing, including French windows with freestone surrounds and a central slate plaque that reads: "Dominus Gulielimus Episcopus Aedificavit AD - 1810". Set back to the left is a single-storey flat roof range that extends the remaining width of the building, including the porch below the three-window central cross range, with small pane sash windows and Gothic windows on the ground floor. The east end has similar details, with a wide two-window gable and a tall chimney stack, along with attached service ranges.

Inside, the building retains an openwell staircase hall dated 1753, featuring an oval ceiling rose, turned balusters, Ionic newell posts, carved tread ends, and a panelled dado. There is a later cast iron supporting column adorned with acanthus leaves and spiral tendrils. The council chamber on the first floor has a segmental vault with delicately detailed Adamesque plasterwork and a Gothic ironwork ventilator. Two trusses are visible from the Chief Executive’s Office, with one infilled with a studded partition and one collar truss featuring arched branches; another truss is said to be of hammerbeam type.
