Description
The Education Offices at Pencadlys Gwynedd is a C-shaped building that forms three sides of a square, situated opposite the main offices. It incorporates the earlier large house at 5 Castle Street as its left side, balanced by a similarly sized and proportioned three-storey square block on the right. These two sections are linked by a one-and-a-half-storey range. The right side block is a rendered, squashed cube with three storeys and three bays on its two street-facing sides, topped with a hipped slate roof.
At street level, three wide arches create a short colonnade along Castle Street, with two additional arches around the corner, all resting on concrete columns, including a double column at the corner. The stone walls beneath these arches are recessed. The first and second floors feature small-paned windows made of uPVC, with continuous string courses. Notably, the first-floor window on the north side facing the square has a projecting balcony adorned with an iron mermaid, which was recovered by Dewi-Prys Thomas from a sailors' home in Liverpool.
The link section, which includes the main entrance, is primarily glass with stone footings at street level and is topped by a strongly overhanging slate mansard roof supported on paired steel pilotis. Dormer windows with raking slate roofs are incorporated within the mansard. Inside, there is an original reception desk located under a timber staircase with paired steel balusters that echo the pilotis on the façade. The first-floor offices feature dormer windows along one side of the corridor.
