Description
The Market Hall, also known as Siola, is a Grade II* listed building in a classical style, dating from the 19th century. It is a two-storey structure with five bays, constructed from roughly dressed blocks of quarried stone laid in regular courses. The building features a hipped slate roof with projecting bracketed eaves at the front and stone stacks at the ends.
The lower storey has an arcaded design with tall round-headed arches that were originally open. The end bays are partially filled with rubble stone and feature three-light wood-framed windows. The central bays are infilled with glazing and include central doors. Each arch has an impost band and keystones made of reconstituted stone painted white, adorned with various moulded heads. The spandrels of the arches contain fluted medallions, also painted white, with foliage bosses that are likely made of cast iron. The left end bay spandrel has a small four-pane window. A freestone plat band is painted white, adding to the building's decorative elements.
In the upper storey, there are tall 24-pane horned sash windows that have been renewed in their original openings, each topped with deep bracketed hoods. The ground level is higher at the rear, which features stone steps leading to a rear porch at the upper-storey level, and to the left, there is a stone porch at an intermediate level.
On the left side of the lower storey, there is a blocked round-headed arch that originally opened to the rear, behind the Royal Madoc Arms Hotel. The upper storey windows are fitted with panelled shutters.
