Description
The Barracks is a symmetrical two-storey building with 14 bays, arranged in a pattern of 1+4+4+4+1. It is constructed from snecked rubble with lighter freestone dressings and features a slate roof behind a parapet adorned with false machicolations on a deep moulded cornice. The four central bays project forward to form a front wing, with the central two bays projecting slightly further. This front wing has a higher parapet that includes a small pediment with a dated inscription band and the Royal Arms. The windows are primarily 12-pane hornless sashes, and all openings are intelled.
On the side walls of the front wing, there are replaced doors set under lintels. To the right and left of the four central bays are four additional bays that feature an upper-storey sill band and a doorway set back from the inner side. These doorways have replaced doors with overlights and are sheltered by stone bracketed canopies, accessible by steps with swept concave balustrades. The end bays project as square turrets, each containing two loops on every storey and single loops on the inner sides.
The left side wall, positioned behind the turret, has a replaced door with a sash window above it. The right side wall, also set back behind the turret, features a 12-pane horned sash window in the lower storey that has been inserted into a former doorway, a 12-pane hornless sash window above, and a blocked window in the upper left, all beneath the continued parapet from the main front. Further to the right is a remaining section of the original west wing, now a two-window cottage that is lower than the front range, with a brick stack and rendered gable end. The windows in this section have been enlarged or replaced.
The rear of the building has windows similar to those at the front, with the three central bays projecting slightly. The central bay contains a replaced door beneath a blind window. On the right side, there is a link to a later 20th-century wing that has been added.
The internal layout has been largely altered, but the two principal doorways on the front elevation still lead to original stairwells. The open-well stairs feature plain balusters and panelled newels.
