Madryn Castle Gatehouse

Madryn Castle Gatehouse is a two-storey rectangular building that is currently roofless and in a dilapidated state. The walls are made of granite rubble, featuring limestone window dressings and an embattled parapet. Both elevations are similar, with a segmental pointed arch in the center, flush stone voussoirs, and two flat-headed stone mullioned three-light windows on each floor. There are hollow-moulded stone drips and iron latticed glazed lights. The rear elevation has partially collapsed, resulting in the loss of the mullions and the head of the right first-floor window. A moulded cornice is situated beneath the ashlar embattled parapet, which has also collapsed at the rear.

Access to the front door is via nine rubble stone steps, flanked by low stone walls at the top. The left end wall is blank, except for a small rainwater outlet in each top corner and a small blocked opening at the top right. The right side features a stone stair with an iron rail leading to a door opening on the first floor. There are remnants of an end chimney in the center of the wall at parapet level.

Both the roof and first floor are missing. The through passage is partially blocked with loose masonry at the rear opening. The internal passage walls are constructed of brick and rendered. There is a door on each side of the front entry leading to ground-floor rooms, which contain the remains of end fireplaces. The ground floor has much loose masonry, and there are also remains of end fireplaces on the first floor.
