Description

Kingsland Windmill is a Grade II* conical tower windmill, constructed from stone and recently covered with whitewashed render. The windmill stands four storeys tall, featuring square-headed openings and small-pane windows arranged in four regular tiers on the west and east sides. On the first floor, there are opposing doorways that once opened onto a staging area, which is now lost, although wooden joists remain. The ground floor entrance on the north side has a boarded door, and there are remains of a perimeter wall that was built to keep cattle away.

This windmill is particularly significant due to the remarkable preservation of much of its original machinery, much of which is nearly operational. At the top, on the Bin Floor, the original chain wheel that drove the cap may still be present, along with three hoppers and a sack hoist that transported grain to this level, as well as an iron crown wheel. Below, on the Stone Floor, the hoppers feed into horses and onto stone vats; two out of the three stones, made from local stone, are complete with their associated machinery, while the machinery for the third stone is partly broken. The first floor retains rare examples of in situ dressers used for grading flour. Other surviving machinery includes gearing, stone governors, and secondary drives.
