Description

Melyn Hywel is a three-storey water-powered corn mill, situated alongside a mill race fed by the Afon Alaw. The building consists of three main blocks: the central mill, a cartshed-granary added to the right (south), and a store to the left (north). It is constructed of rubble masonry, featuring openings with slate sills and stone or timber lintels, and has a modern slate roof with stone copings. The entrance elevation faces the road to the west.

The gabled central milling block has a doorway offset to the right (south) with a small three-light window to the right and a larger window to the left, along with a window above. A larger 16-pane casement window is centrally located beneath the gable apex, offset to the left of the door. At the rear, there is a 14-foot (4.27 meters) overshot waterwheel. The first floor features centrally placed windows on each return elevation; the south return includes another window to the right (east) set into a larger, partially blocked opening, while the north return has a doorway offset to the right (west) and a small window to its left.

The north block is positioned at a right angle to the main block, featuring two wide cart bays at ground floor level, each with a large timber lintel and a first floor window above the center of each bay. Rubblestone steps lead to the loft doorway in the south gable, and there is a single first floor window at the rear.

The south block is also set at a right angle to the main block, with a first floor doorway to the right (south) within a porch created by a lean-to slate roof between a rubblestone wall and pillar. The ground level slopes down to the left (north), featuring small ground and first floor windows to the left of the doorway. The rear elevation has small ground and first floor windows towards the center, with a first floor window offset to the right (west) in the gable and a single window set in the gable apex.

Inside, the mill retains refurbished machinery, including millstones, hoppers, sackhoists, and other meal processing equipment. The roof has been restored but still features some old timbers and pegged, collared trusses.
