Description
The Depot and Bridge No. 23, located at Drumshoreland on the Union Canal, was designed by engineer Hugh Baird around 1820. This segmental arched bridge features a central keystone inscribed with the number '23'. At the northeast side, there is a lean-to storehouse built into the wing wall, which has a blocked doorway. The south side of the storehouse has a curved and corbelled corner, with an entrance to the east that includes a timber door and oval ventilation holes. The bridge facilitates traffic over the canal, connecting Broxburn to the hamlet of Pumpherston to the south, with a basin situated alongside. The structure is made of stugged and droved grey ashlar, with slab coping stones on the parapets. The storehouse exhibits similar stonework, featuring long and short quoins. The roof of the storehouse is covered with grey slates and has a stone ridge.
