Description

This is a later 19th-century coach house and associated buildings located within a villa complex at 7-7A Royal Terrace, Linlithgow. The main building is a two-story, four-bay villa, incorporating a carriage passage. It is constructed of cream-colored stugged and snecked sandstone rubble, with polished ashlar dressings to the north elevation. Architectural details include a base course, corniced string and eaves courses, stop-chamfered and architraved windows with bracketed sills and ashlar mullions, and rusticated quoins. A courtyard lies behind the villa, containing a service wing, the coach house, and further outbuildings.

The north (entrance) elevation features three bays to the right, with a corniced and balustraded porch centrally supported by columns on pedestals. A flight of five steps leads to an architraved, corniced, and pilastered round-arched doorcase, containing a panelled double door with encaustic tiles and a deep-set vestibule door with etched glazing. A window is positioned above the door. Full-height canted windows are present on the far right bay, and bipartite windows to the left. A slightly projecting bay to the outer left incorporates a depressed-arch carriage passage with a keystone, and a window above. A deeply set panelled door serves the entrance to 7a (accessed through the carriage passage).

The south (rear) elevation showcases three bays to the left, a wide canted bay centrally, with windows at ground and first floor levels, and windows to the right, including a carriage passage and a window above. A single-story service wing, later fitted with a flat roof, extends at right angles to the outer left, comprising six bays, with a door located off-centre to the right.

The villa has plate glass sash and case windows and a grey slate piended roof, with ashlar corniced stacks. A canted dormer is visible on the rear roof, along with rooflights on both the north and south sides.

The coach house, situated to the south and at right angles to the service wing, is rectangular in plan, two stories high, and features four asymmetrical bays. It’s constructed of stugged and snecked cream sandstone rubble. It has a set-back to the left, a carriage opening to the outer left with a lintel and relieving arch, and a window to the right, with a loading door breaking the eaves within a gabled dormerhead above. A door is located to the outer right. The coach house has a grey slate piended roof, three rooflights, and a reduced stack off-centre to the left.

A single-story, rectangular-plan, free-standing outbuilding, currently used as a garage, stands to the east. It features an off-centre entrance, a chamfered corner, and a piended slate roof.

The property is enclosed by coped low sandstone walls with decorated iron railings. A carriage entrance is positioned to the right (gates missing), while a pedestrian entrance is on the left, flanked by short panelled ashlar piers with pyramidal ashlar caps.
