Description
The Vale of Leven Cemetery in Alexandria features a bridge designed by James Wilson of Greenock in 1881. This double garden cemetery is situated on a hillside overlooking the town.
The boundary wall is constructed from squared and snecked red sandstone rubble topped with ashlar coping. It includes decorative cast-iron pierced piers with urn finials, as well as decorative cast-iron railings and a pedestrian gate to the right.
The bridge spans a path over a burn, leading to a secondary graveyard. It is adorned with a decorative entwined vesical pierced balustrade and small terminal piers capped with pyramids.
Within the cemetery, there are various memorials from the late 19th century, including an obelisk and a trumpet-blowing angel dedicated to Mary Thurburn from 1889. The Kinloch family memorial features a Greek design with a funeral urn and an ashlar casket beneath an arch, commemorating the death of the infant son of Thomas Kinloch.
