Description
Brierylaw Cemetery is a formally laid out cemetery designed in a grid format, with a bridge in the southeast corner crossing Dean Burn, which leads to Shawfield Cemetery, arranged in a radial format. The gravestones and monuments date from the late 1870s. On the north side of Brierylaw Cemetery, there is an enclosure featuring a red sandstone dwarf wall that creates a small enclosure, with square-plan piers topped with scrolled coping and roundels near the top of each. The enclosure is adorned with intricate wrought-iron railings.
Among the notable gravestones is a rectangular stone with a bas-relief crucifix dedicated to Hugh Morris of Broadmeadows, who died in April 1900, and his wife Margaret, who died in August 1914. Their children, Hugh (died January 1939), John (died December 1943), William (died December 1943), and Margaret Graham (died April 1958), are also commemorated. To the right, there is a rectangular wall-mounted stone dedicated to Anna Gertrude Montgomerie Hamilton, who died in February 1937, along with others.
The boundary walls consist of rubble with roughly rounded sandstone coping. The quadrants are made of squared whinstone coped with fine arrow shaft-head cast-iron railings to the south. The gatepiers are octagonal in shape with pyramidal coping, and there are two-leaf cast-iron vehicular gates.
