Description

This is a later 19th-century lodge with associated stable block, coach house, and outbuildings situated at 1 Thornfield Avenue, Selkirk. The buildings are constructed of bull-faced sandstone with polished ashlar dressings, with a bull-faced rendered monopitch elevation to the south-west side of the outbuildings.

The stable and coach house range is two storeys to the left of the centre and single storey with an attic to the right. The south-west elevation features a gabled bay to the inner left with a segmental-arched opening at ground level, now housing a modern glazed door and partition, a window at first floor, and a small window in the gablehead. A two-leaf boarded door is found in the outer left bay, with a bipartite window above breaking the eaves with a gabled dormerhead. A door opening, now partially blocked to form a window, is present in the inner right bay, above which sits a boarded door to a gabled hayloft dormer. Single-storey outbuildings project from the outer right bay. The north-east elevation is asymmetrical, with a three-storey gabled bay to the inner right containing a bipartite window and a hoisting beam to the gablehead. A blank bay sits to the outer right, and two round window openings are located at the wallhead of each bay to the left of centre.

The lodge itself has a north-west elevation with a window in each bay. The bay to the left is set back and gabled. The south-west elevation has a gabled bay to the left with a bipartite window, and a set-back bay to the left with a round-arched door within a slightly advanced and gabled doorpiece. The north-east elevation has a blank bay to the right and a window to the right of the gabled bay to the left. Outbuildings project to the outer left.

The outbuildings on the north-west elevation are three bays; a boarded door is centrally positioned, a modern glazed door is in the bay to the right, with a modern timber lean-to addition between the centre and right-hand bays. A metal door is flanked to the left by a window in the left-hand bay.

The stable and coach house have timber sash and case windows with four panes and plate glass. The lodge has modern glazing. The lodge, stable and coach house, and the bay to the left of the outbuildings are covered by a slate roof, while the remaining bays of the outbuildings have a monopitch leaded roof. Ashlar stacks are present on the lodge and stable and coach house, and a metal ventilator sits in the left-hand bay of the outbuildings.

The interiors were not inspected in 1995.

The gatepiers are constructed of ashlar with a square plan, stop-chamfered arrises and coping.
