Description

Dandswall is a two-storey house with a basement, built in 1879 and altered later, subdivided around 1955. It has four main bays, with two single-storey service bays attached. The house is constructed of bull-faced sandstone with stugged ashlar dressings and chamfered, droved arrises.

The south elevation is arranged as a group of four bays, with a further two single-storey bays to the right. An advanced gabled porch with a panelled, two-leaf door is set into the inner right bay at ground level, with a square plaque above the door. A bipartite, transomed window sits above the porch at first floor level, breaking the eaves. To the left of the porch, a window is present at ground level, with a moulded string course corbelling out at first floor, supporting a bipartite, transomed window. The gabled bay to the far left has windows on both floors. The single-storey bays to the right have a bipartite window in the penultimate bay, and the final bay is advanced and gabled, with a slightly advanced chimney breast.

The north elevation is six bays, grouped as 2-1-3. A piended, canted window sits between the central and right-hand bays of the three-bay group, with windows in each bay at first floor, also breaking the eaves with dormerheads. A gabled bay to the left has a full-height, canted window swept to the gable on both the ground and first floors. A single bay, slightly set back and to the left of the three-bay group, has windows at ground and first floor, again with eaves-breaking dormerheads. A single-storey, two-bay group is situated furthest to the left, with a partly-glazed door in the right-hand bay, and a two-pane, rectangular fanlight above. A single bay to the left has a window at ground and first floor. A slate-hung box dormer features a tripartite, timber-mullioned window.

The west elevation has a gabled bay to the left featuring a full-height, canted window swept to the gable. A modern, single-storey, glazed addition occupies the ground floor of the bay to the right, with an eaves-breaking window above in a dormerhead.

The east elevation shows three bays of a single-storey section to the right. A door with a plate glass letterbox fanlight is centrally positioned. A glazed, two-leaf door with a four-pane fanlight sits in the bay to the left. The bay to the outer right is gabled, with a monopitched projection extending to the right.

The windows are predominantly timber sash and case, with plate glass. The roof is covered in slate with modern skylights and has ashlar coped stacks. Dated rainhoppers are present.

The interior was not fully inspected in 1995.

A cast-iron lamp standard, with a panelled pedestal, fluted shaft with spiralling, fish-like animals, and light fittings sits in front of the house on the south elevation (not working in 1995).

The boundary is defined by coursed whinstone rubble walls with ashlar coping. Bull-faced sandstone quadrant walls lead to both vehicular and pedestrian gates. The gate piers are square-plan ashlar with chamfered arrises and pyramidal coping. A timber gate provides access for pedestrians, while a modern metal gate provides access for vehicles.
