Description
Approximately dating to 1880, 18 Shawpark Road is a single-story house with an attic, originally featuring a three-bay design, accompanied by an L-shaped stable block and coach house extending north and east to form a courtyard to the east. The house is constructed from bull-faced squared and snecked sandstone with stugged ashlar dressings. The east elevation uses squared and snecked whinstone with stugged sandstone dressings, while the east gable is constructed of whinstone rubble. All arrises are chamfered.
The south elevation features a panelled door in the center, topped by a three-pane rectangular fanlight, and sheltered by a timber-bracketed canopy. Bipartite windows are found in each flanking bay. Gabled dormers flank the bays, each with bipartite timber-mullioned windows and bargeboarding.
The west elevation has seven bays. A projecting gabled two-bay group is situated on the outer right, containing a window to the right. A modern lean-to conservatory occupies the bay to the left, with a panelled door featuring glazed upper panels and a four-pane rectangular fanlight. Segmental-arched grille openings are located at the eaves in the center bay and each bay to the left of center. A gabled two-bay group is on the outer left, with a window to the right of center.
The east (courtyard) elevation is five bays, grouped as two and three. A gabled two-bay group is on the left, with a half-blinded (line-rendered) door opening, with a window, in the right bay. A blank bay is centrally positioned, breaking through the eaves with ashlar, topped by a gabled loft opening with a boarded door and glazed upper panels. A segmental-arched opening with a two-leaf flush door is to the left, and a bipartite window to the right.
The south (courtyard) elevation features two two-leaf boarded doors in each bay, with two-pane glazed upper panels.
Six-pane upper and two-pane lower timber sash and case windows are present throughout. The roof is slate with exposed rafters at the eaves. A piended dormer is visible on the north elevation of the stable block. Ashlar coped gablehead stacks are present on the lodge, topped with octagonal cans; a wallhead ashlar stack is located centrally on the west elevation. The coach house incorporates two-pane 19th-century flush skylights.
Interior inspection in 1995 was partial. The stable has been partly altered recently, with trevises removed, revealing a boarded dado with hexagonal ceramic tiles to the sting course. Hopper two-pane windows serve as vents. The courtyard and gate piers were originally flanked by square-plan gate piers, now removed to the west, and feature setts at the entrance. The courtyard’s surface is a concrete grid-grooved design. Fine cast-iron railings are located to the south of the lodge.
