Description
Barbour Cemetery, located off Shore Road in Kilcreggan, is an early 20th century cemetery that sits on a prominent site overlooking the Clyde Estuary. The cemetery features a geometric layout with a central oval-shaped monument area surrounded by paths. To the east and south, there are walls that include wall monuments, and to the west, there is a later, lower burial area.
The cemetery's gates and gatepiers consist of large circular drum piers made of quartz, with a stugged ashlar base band, neck ring, and square dome cap. The heavy decorative cast-iron gates have a curvilinear lower panel and a paterae panel, along with plain spear-headed railings. One of the gates to the west is slightly off its hinges.
Inside the cemetery, there are various fine monuments from the early to earlier 20th century, including Celtic crosses and neo-classical designs. The centerpiece is the G R Cayser monument, an earlier 20th century slab monument featuring neo-classical detailing. There is also a fine early 20th century classical aedicular monument dedicated to William Robertson, who died in 1908. Additionally, there is a 1930s geometric classical grave monument for the Dunlop family, and a Gothic monument with crocketted detail made of ashlar and polished pink granite, topped with a birdcage-like cap and cross-finial, dedicated to Sir Charles Canzer.
