Description

North Lodge at Knockderry Castle is a mid-19th century lodge that underwent significant alterations by architect William Leiper around 1896. It features a single-storey L-plan cottage with a two-storey M-gable addition to the southwest, situated on sloping ground. The earlier section is constructed of painted rubble, while the 1896 addition has a cement-rendered ground floor and a red tile-hung upper floor, with advanced eaves and exposed rafters.

The southwest elevation presents a symmetrical M-gable with a cement-rendered ground floor and an oversailing red tile-hung first floor, featuring two windows that are symmetrically arranged and consist of multi-paned casements. The northwest elevation shows the left return of the later block on the outer right, with a single window at ground level and a blank upper floor. The earlier cottage's rubble gable is to the left, with a canted window designed by Leiper at the centre, featuring a cement-rendered base, a red-tiled apron, a multi-paned window, and a slate roof. The original cottage's L-plan is recessed to the left.

On the northeast elevation, the gable is advanced to the left, with two windows on the right return, consisting of a three-pane over three-pane sash and case with horizontal glazing. There is an entrance jamb to the right, which includes a modern door and window. The southeast elevation features a two-bay harled block to the right with a corrugated iron roof supported by wooden beams, and a lower block to the left that has a gablet breaking the eaves, which was formerly used as lean-to greenhouses.

The lodge includes multi-paned timber casement and fixed windows, as well as timber sash and case windows. The roof is covered with green slate and has red terracotta ridging, along with rendered and coped wallhead stacks topped with circular terracotta cans.
