Description

Loch Lomond And Trossachs National Park Planning Authority

Later/late 19th century. Located to the E of Port of Menteith on the A81, unusual free-standing, 2-sided, hollow cast iron milepost. Painted white with black lettering, it has 2 indicator panels embossed with mileage distances. Indicator panel to left (W) reads: 'STIRLING 15 MLS. THORNHILL 5¼ MLS'. Indicator panel to right (E): 'ABERFOYLE 4½ MLS'. Painted black bands to shaft, tabs to rear of indicator panels to allow it to be screwed into wall. The milepost is the only one of its kind to survive in Port of Menteith parish along this stretch of the A81 within the Park boundary. It has local importance as a rare survival.
