Description
The milepost located east of Port of Menteith on the A81 dates from the late 19th century. It is an unusual free-standing, two-sided, hollow cast iron structure. The milepost is painted white with black lettering and features two indicator panels embossed with mileage distances. The left panel, facing west, reads: 'STIRLING 15 MLS. THORNHILL 5¼ MLS', while the right panel, facing east, indicates 'ABERFOYLE 4½ MLS'. The shaft has painted black bands, and there are tabs on the rear of the indicator panels that allow it to be screwed into a wall. This milepost is the only one of its kind to survive in the Port of Menteith parish along this stretch of the A81 within the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park, making it a locally important and rare historical feature.
