Description

The Tollhouse in Port of Menteith is a single-storey building dating from around 1830. It is prominently located in the centre of the hamlet on the main Stirling-Aberfoyle road (A81), directly opposite the Arnprior road-end. During the late 18th and early 19th centuries, a network of turnpike roads was established across Scotland, funded by trustees who collected tolls to recover their costs. This toll house is a notable example of early 19th-century architecture and contributes positively to the local streetscape.

The principal south elevation is nearly symmetrical, featuring an advanced central gable from which a two-light canted bay projects, providing views over the main road. To the left of the bay is a single window, while the right side has the front door and another single window. There is a substantial L-shaped single-storey extension built in the 20th century to the northwest, which is set back from and to the side of the main elevation. At the rear, the building has an advanced central gable with a piended roof and a mix of 19th-century and modern windows.

Inside, the Toll House retains some of its original layout. A small lobby is located behind the front door, leading to the right into the former kitchen, which includes an alcove for a box-bed, and to the left into the room with the bay window.

The building is constructed of whitewashed rubble and features piended and pitched roofs covered with graded grey slates. The windows are predominantly modern four-pane timber sash and case types, and the front door is a two-leaf timber design with a five-pane fanlight above. The building also has tall, slightly shouldered wallhead stacks with circular clay cans, timber bargeboards, and some cast-iron rainwater goods.
