Description

Auchyle is a traditional 2-storey, 3-bay farmhouse dating from around 1800, located just northeast of the village of Port of Menteith within the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park. Originally part of the Rednock Estate, it is a good example of a relatively unaltered improvement period farmhouse, set back from the main road.

The principal elevation faces south and is near symmetrical, featuring a central door flanked by windows on either side and above. There are single windows on both the ground and first floors of the west return. To the east, there is a lower 2-storey bothy that is set back, with a small ground floor window on the front, modern glazing on the side, and a single window on the first floor at the rear. The farmhouse has a largely blank rear wall, except for a single window in the center.

The building is constructed of roughcast with painted sandstone margins. It features predominantly 12-pane timber sash and case windows, with modern rooflights on the front. The house has a pitched roof, while the bothy and the rear addition to the house have piended roofs, and the rear addition to the bothy has a flat roof, all covered with new grey slates. The gablehead stacks are rendered with coped tops and circular clay cans.

While access to the interior was not possible in 2004, the current tenant reports that it includes a circular stone wheel stair, a feature found in some 18th century houses in the parish. The first floor of the bothy can be accessed by a ladder from the kitchen below.
