Description

This is an earlier 19th century, two-storey, three-bay farmhouse, situated on a sloping site north of Rednock House (listed separately). Originally part of the Rednock Estate, it represents a well-preserved example of an improvement period farm. The farmhouse incorporates stone from the nearby ruined 16th century Castle of Rednock, a circular tower and Scheduled Ancient Monument located immediately to the southwest. A much-altered courtyard of steading buildings lies to the east.

The symmetrical south elevation features a central front door with a three-light fanlight, now protected by a later gabled timber porch. Flanking the door are canted bay windows on the ground floor, with three evenly spaced windows above. The west gable has a single ground floor window, while the east gable is blank, with a modern timber lean-to garage attached. To the rear, a single-storey extension is present on the right side, featuring small barred windows on the north and west elevations, possibly originally a game store. A small modern brick porch is centrally located on the rear elevation, and a single kitchen window is to the left. Two single windows are located on the first floor, flanking the central stair window.

The interior follows a simple rectangular plan, with four rooms leading off a central hall on the ground floor. A timber staircase is fitted with decorative cast-iron balusters and a painted mahogany handrail. Plastered ceilings with cornicing—an egg and dart motif is present in the sitting room—are found in the hall and sitting room, while the rest of the house has timber boarded ceilings. Interior doors are timber panelled, and timber working shutters are fitted throughout.

The farmhouse is constructed from exposed coursed and snecked rubble with quoins and rybats on the south and north elevations, with rendered side elevations. The front door is timber with half-glazed panelled sections. Most windows are predominantly 12-pane lying pane timber sash and case windows. The main farmhouse has a pitched roof, while the rear extension is pitched to the west and piended to the east. The roofs are covered with graded grey slates. Two gablehead stacks, curved at their base and fitted with yellow clay cans, are present; the west stack is corniced and rendered, while the east stack is a brick replacement. Some cast iron rainwater goods are incorporated.

A low rubble retaining wall runs to the south of the farmhouse. Attractive painted wrought iron gates and gatepiers are located at either end of the wall.
