Description
Corriegowrie is a former Temperance Hotel from the later 19th century, now used as a domestic residence. This two-storey and attic building features three bays and is gabled. It has a central doorpiece with pilasters, two canted dormer windows with piended roofs, and a later two-storey bathroom and scullery addition at the rear. The front has a regular arrangement of windows, while the rear is fairly regular; there are no windows in the gables. The doorpiece is supported by stop-chamfered pilasters and features a corniced architrave. The windows also have stop-chamfered margins. The building stands out on the street due to its exposed northern gable, and its history as a temperance hotel adds to its historical significance.
Inside, there is a curved timber stair with decorative cast-iron balusters and a mahogany handrail, along with timber panelled interior doors throughout.
The materials used include a two-leaf timber panelled front door with a fanlight, four-pane glazing in timber sash and case windows at the rear, and non-traditional uPVC windows at the front. The principal elevation is made of squared, stugged, snecked sandstone with a polished sandstone ashlar doorpiece. The sides and rear are constructed from random local rubble with sandstone window margins, while the gables are harled. The building features coped wallhead stacks with short clay cans and a graded grey slate roof.
