Description

Mandalay is a pair of semi-detached villas built around 1902, featuring two storeys and an attic with a rectangular plan and piend roofs. Each villa has two bays, deep eaves, bow windows, a balcony, and piend-roofed dormer windows at the front. There are later single-storey scullery additions at the rear. These well-detailed houses remain relatively unaltered, retaining their original front doors and windows. Although set back from the street, they hold a prominent position on the main road through Strathyre.

The symmetrical four-bay principal elevation includes two-leaf timber panelled doors with moulded stop-chamfered architraves in the central bays, and four-light mullioned bow windows in the outer bays. A decorative railing balcony spans the first floor, supported by the bow windows and a central cast-iron column. The first floor also features bipartite mullioned windows in the outer bays and two bipartite piend-roofed dormers in the attic. Corniced, shouldered stacks rise through the eaves on the side elevations. The rear elevation has regular fenestration, with windows that have raised margins and projecting cills.

Inside, there are two steps leading to the entrance lobbies, which have half-glazed timber panelled lobby doors with frosted lights. The halls feature ceiling arches, and there are timber stairs with turned balusters. Both houses have panelled interior doors.

The villas are constructed from squared, snecked, bull-faced pink sandstone with polished ashlar dressings, while the sides and rear are rendered. The principal rooms have timber sash and case windows with plate glass glazing, and the other windows have four-pane glazing. The roof was recently re-slated with smooth grey slates in 2004.
