Description
Tigh Na Shian is a single-storey longhouse, likely built in the mid to late 18th century, with later alterations and a rear extension added in 1953. The structure consists of a three-bay cottage featuring a central door and a two-bay byre, which is now part of the domestic living space, located to the north. An ancillary shed with a corrugated iron roof is attached to the north gable, and there is a small extension at the rear from 1953. A substantial stone porch with a slated roof enhances the entrance, while short stone ridge stacks indicate the original extent of the cottage's domestic area. This building is a notable and relatively unaltered example of 18th century vernacular architecture and is believed to be the birthplace of the Gaelic poet Dugald Buchanan. The materials include a late 20th century timber front door, timber casements with mostly six-pane glazing, very thick rubble walls on a boulder base, small graded grey Scottish slates, and Velux windows at the rear.
