Description
Woodend Lodge, located on South Avenue in Buchanan Old House, is a pair of cottages built in the late 19th century. The cottages are single storey with an attic and are arranged in an asymmetrical L-plan, featuring a later lean-to addition that fills the re-entrant angle at the rear. The exterior is constructed from squared and snecked sandstone, which shows some spalling, with one of the cottages painted. There is a base course, and the windows are sandstone mullioned and transomed, topped with Tudor hoodmoulds.
On the east elevation, there are three bays arranged asymmetrically. The outer left has a broad gable with a canted corniced window and a deep base, along with a mullioned window and small windows at the centre of the gablehead. To the right, there is a narrow gabled porch that leads to a four-panelled door with a letterbox fanlight. The outer right features a recessed bay.
The south elevation has four bays that are nearly symmetrically arranged. The outer right has a broad bay with a window beneath a gable that breaks the eaves, while the outer left contains three windows.
The cottages feature small 9-paned timber casement windows on the sandstone cottage and 4-pane timber windows on the painted cottage. The roof is covered with grey slate and has lead flashings, with ashlar coping to the skews.
