Description

The Ice House at Buchanan Castle, likely built in the early 19th century, is located some distance northwest of the castle itself. This structure is set into a small natural hill and is primarily covered with turf. The only visible masonry is on the north entrance front, which features a random rubble wall with a low central doorway. Inside, the walls are made of narrow red brick. The doorway opens into a passageway that has a segmentally arched roof. At the end of the passage, there is a circular chamber topped with a shallow domed brick roof. Below the passage level, there is a deep circular pit lined with brick, designed for storing ice.

This icehouse is a notable example of the building stock associated with a large 19th century country estate and is in excellent condition for its age and design. The grounds of Buchanan Castle are included in the Inventory of Gardens and Designed Landscapes in Scotland.
