Description
The summerhouse at Buchanan Castle Estate, along with three associated footbridges, was likely built in the early 19th century for the Duke of Montrose. These structures are part of a landscape feature known as the 'Cascade Walk', situated along a scenic wooded area of the Doghouse Burn. They are notable examples of 19th century garden building architecture and are included in the Inventory of Gardens and Designed Landscapes in Scotland.
The summerhouse is located on the north bank of the burn, just below a small waterfall. It is a small, square-plan building with a single room and features a large round-arched opening on the gabled south elevation, providing a view of the burn for those inside. The interior has a barrel-vaulted roof, while the exterior has a pitched roof covered with slate, which is currently in poor condition. The structure is made of random rubble, and the south gable includes an overhanging stone eaves detail.
Downstream from the summerhouse, there are three small rustic hump-backed footbridges that cross the burn at intervals, each constructed of rubble with a single segmental span. These bridges connect the summerhouse to the Duchess Bridge, which is listed separately.
