Description
The Wade Bridge at Dalwhinnie is a single-span rubble bridge dating from around 1730, constructed during the time of General Wade's military roads program. The bridge crosses the River Truim and features a small flood arch on the western bank. It is built with pinned rubble, and the dressed rubble arch rings spring from natural rock abutments. Originally, the bridge would have had a parapet, but this no longer survives. The roadway surface is now turf. The main arch has a span of approximately 30 feet, while the flood arch measures 9 feet. The bridge was formerly designated a scheduled monument, protected by law, from 1958 to 2016. References to the bridge can be found in J.B. Salmond’s Wade in Scotland and G.R. Curtis’s paper on roads and bridges between Dunkeld and Inverness, published in the Proceedings of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland.
