Description
Rowan Cottage is an early to mid-19th century pair of single-storey cottages, originally three bays wide with a central door for each. The cottages are built of whitewashed rubble, with double plank doors. They feature two-pane glazing, small gable loft windows, and modern fenestration to the rear. End and ridge stacks are present, and the roof is covered with corrugated iron. A single-bay extension adjoins the northwest gable of the cottages.
The interiors have been modernised, but the southeast cottage retains a stone canopied hearth with a monolith chimney breast supported by corbels. A dry stone garden wall separates the gardens from the road. The cottages face an old military road. The northwest cottage is locally known to have once been an inn called "The Splash". Rowan Cottage is situated within the Cairngorms National Park.
