Description
This is an early 19th-century burial ground, roughly circular in shape, enclosed by a coped rubble wall. An entrance is located on the south side, flanked by square gate piers constructed of tooled rubble and topped with square caps that support cast concrete urns. Running along the south edge, a policy wall from Cluny Castle separates the burial ground from the road, with an entrance that aligns with the burial ground's gateway. This section features square gate piers with crenellated caps and cast-iron gates displaying spearhead detailing.
Within the burial ground is the MacPherson of Cluny enclosure, which contains an arched recess built into the surrounding wall. This recess holds a low-relief marble sarcophagus set upon a deep plinth. The earliest dated tombstone present is from 1801, and the oldest memorial within the MacPherson enclosure commemorates Colonel Duncan MacPherson of Cluny, who died in 1817 and was responsible for building the present Cluny Castle. While primarily associated with the Cluny MacPherson family, the burial ground contains the remains of others. It is suggested that the site may have previously been used as an ecclesiastical site.
