Description
Catlodge Lodge is an early 19th-century, two-storey house facing the northeast, originally with three wide bays. A central bay projects forward and has a gable. Later extensions were added to the rear and at a right angle to the northwest gable. The main part of the house is built from grey granite rubble with dressed granite ashlar detailing, while the additions are of rubble construction.
The main entrance is within a painted timber doorpiece featuring pilasters and a cornice, and it incorporates a panelled door with a rectangular fanlight containing decorative glazing. Above the entrance is a pointed-headed window with intersecting astragals. Canted bay windows are present on the ground floor, and the outer first-floor windows rise through the wallhead and are set beneath boarded gablets. The windows generally have 12 panes of glass, with lying-pane glazing within the canted bays. The extensions to the sides have varied window styles and glazing patterns. The roof is slated, with projecting eaves, and has coped end stacks.
Inside, a staircase has slender cast-iron balusters decorated with palmette detailing. The property is approached by a pair of square, tooled granite gate piers, each surmounted by a cast concrete cat, which represents the crest of the MacPherson family. A drystone rubble wall, roughly coped, runs alongside.
A two-chambered privy survives in the garden behind the house. The lodge lies within the Cairngorms National Park.
