Description
The Old Bridge of Livet, likely dating from the early 18th century, spans the River Livet at Bridgend of Livet. It comprises two independent humpback arches. Each arch springs from and is divided by a natural rocky outcrop within the river. The primary arch is a high, semi-circular rubble arch, featuring a turfed surface, with a similar secondary segmental arch below. The larger arch has an approximate span of 25 to 30 feet, while the smaller arch spans approximately 15 feet. Local tradition attributes the bridge's construction to either the Duke of Gordon or the Marquis of Huntly. The bridge was damaged in the floods of 1829, at which time a third arch was destroyed. In 1985, the bridge surface was re-turfed and a picnic site was established nearby. Historical sources mentioning the bridge include The Statistical Account (1794), Thomas Dick Lauder's An Account of the Great Floods of August 1829 (1830), and the Imperial Gazetteer of Scotland (c. 1858).
